KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii is deeply saddened by the tragic accident which claimed five lives here Tuesday (Jan 15)
In a statement, he said the crash which involved three vehicles and two motorcycles has had a telling effect on frequent road users and residents of the surrounding areas.
”We have engaged with a few of the residents and frequent road users and accidents are quite a frequent occurrence in that part of the road.
“That is why some safety measures must be urgently taken to address the concerns of the people,” he said, adding that road safety is a matter of utmost priority.
“We will intensify our efforts to engage, communicate and collaborate with the relevant authorities, including Kuching South City Council (MBKS), to address road safety concerns in this area and across Kuching, in terms of improving street lighting and setting up protective barriers between lanes to enhance safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
”I firmly believe that proactive safety measures must be taken to prevent further tragedies.
“This includes speed limits and proper enforcement in this straight road. I also wish to remind all road users to exercise greater caution, particularly during this festive season, when traffic volume tends to increase,” he added.
Additionally, he urged all parents and guardians to take an active role in educating their children on road safety.
“Ensuring that our young people are adequately informed and preventing them from driving without a valid licence is a shared responsibility we must all uphold.
”I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims during this difficult time,” he added.
