JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor state government seeks to learn from Sarawak and Malacca in terms of tourism development, says Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
According to a news report from TVS, Onn expressed the state government’s intention to study the approaches used by both states in developing their tourism sectors.
He acknowledged that Johor is blessed with natural beauty and cultural heritage, which he believes can offer a unique experience to international tourists.
Onn stated that Johor shares many similarities with these two states in terms of tourism products, as both offer destinations centered around nature.
“Johor has spent approximately RM115 million over 2024 and 2025 on the tourism sector to enhance all existing tourism products in the state.
“At the same time, we also want to learn from our neighbouring states, Sarawak and Malaccca, on how they have managed to develop their tourism sectors so rapidly.”
Onn said this during the opening ceremony of the Asean Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) 2025 at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here on Wednesday (Jan 15).
He further stated that the organization of TRAVEX 2025 demonstrates the spirit of Asean unity in promoting the region as a global tourism destination.
“In Johor, we have a unique advantage as a bridge between Malaysia and neighboring countries like Singapore.
“This strategic location allows us to showcase not only Johor’s beauty but also Asean’s collective strength as a global tourism powerhouse.
“This special position makes Johor a vibrant hub of diverse cultures, history, and progress.”
Over 1,000 delegates from within and outside the country, especially from the Asean region, attended the event, while more than 200 booths were set up to promote attractive destinations to visitors.
TRAVEX 2025 is part of the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) 2025, which runs from Wednesday until next Monday.
Also present during the opening ceremony was federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
