KUCHING: Sarawak’s greatest strength lies in its ethnic and religious diversity.

Stressing that a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society is a blessing, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said, in this instance, houses of worship  like the Sarawak Blessed Church (SBC) play a crucial role in promoting harmony and mutual respect in the community.

“As we look around this sanctuary, we are reminded of the importance,” he said at the opening of the SBC sanctuary on Saturday.

“This sanctuary is not just a place for worship; it is a hub for community, a space where individuals from all walks of life can come together in shared purpose.

“It is a reminder that when we unite in faith and service, we can achieve remarkable things.”

The Premier’s speech was delivered by Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai.

He also said that the values that the church uphold —compassion, generosity, and selflessness — are the very values that underpin Sarawak’s development agenda.

“By embodying these principles, SBC is not only uplifting individuals but also contributing to the collective good of our state,” he added.

He also commended the church for its focus on young people.

“As we work toward our vision for a prosperous Sarawak, we recognise that the youth are our greatest asset. They are the foundation of our future, and their growth and empowerment are vital to the progress of our state.

“Your programmes for young people are equipping them to navigate the challenges of a complex world. You are nurturing their character, helping them make positive life choices, and guiding them toward meaningful contributions to society.

“May this sanctuary serve as a place of transformation and inspiration for generations to come. Let it be a beacon of light, a source of hope, and a reminder of what is possible when we come together in faith and purpose,” he said.

Covering an area of 5,440 square metres, the sanctuary which boasts a seating capacity of 4,581, comes equipped with state-of-the-art concert hall facilities and an auditorium with cutting-edge audiovisual systems.
