SIBU: Sarawak has been selected as Malaysia’s key location in a major partnership with Japan, focusing on the production of ammonia as part of a large-scale strategic plan.

In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the strategic plan will be finalised in May.

“Yesterday, I was with our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba.

“The Japanese Prime Minister recognised Sarawak as the only state capable of contributing significantly to climate affairs. He mentioned that Sarawak and Japan would collaborate in producing ammonia.

“We already have Sarawak-owned methanol in Bintulu, and we will also establish an ammonia plant.

“With our resources, this is part of a grand plan between Malaysia and Japan, which is expected to be finalised in May. For Malaysia, the location will be in Sarawak,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Central Zone Delegates Conference at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today (Jan 11).

He said with such facts mentioned by the Japanese Prime Minister, he felt proud of the state’s recognition.

“This is the struggle of PBB. Without PBB, perhaps people wouldn’t know what Sarawak has achieved.

“So we safeguard our resources and adopt new ideas, and I mentioned on water,”he said.

He also said that according to experts, in five years, global energy will shift.

“I have discussed with Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on this. In five years, global energy will no longer rely on oil and gas energy but instead use what is known as synthetic gas.

“This involves a mixture of carbon and green hydrogen. These two elements combined will produce synthetic gas, which will serve as a source of energy.

“This is a new approach, and, God willing, Sarawak will be among the first in the world to use this technology,” he mentioned.

He also said the process called Methylcyclohexane (MCH) process will utilise the state’s vast water resources, including dam reservoirs, rainfall, and rivers.

“With this, we aim to establish Sarawak as a leading energy hub not just for our region but for the world,”said Abang Johari.
