LUNDU: The introduction of a mandatory course for adoption has been proposed as a key initiative to enhance awareness and provide detailed guidance for individuals planning to adopt children.

This innovative idea was put forward by administrative officer at the Lundu District Office Muhammad Isa Limon, who recently received the MyCreative Idea (MCi) Award 2024.

The MCi platform promotes the sharing of creative concepts through digital channels, including portals and mobile applications.

Isa shared that the concept for the course emerged during his studies on statutory functions, where he identified a gap in the adoption process—no mandatory course exists to prepare involved parties.

“Having a standardised and uniform course is crucial to ensure all parties fully understand their rights and responsibilities,” he said during a recent interview with the Sarawak Transformation and Innovation Unit (STIU).

He explained that the course, if implemented, would yield both immediate and long-term benefits.

“In the short term, it will lead to the creation of a standard syllabus that can be adopted by district offices across Sarawak.

“In the long run, it will provide clarity on roles and responsibilities while safeguarding the welfare of adopted children,” he added.

Isa also highlighted current practices in the adoption process, which include interviews with both adoptive and biological parents.

These interviews, he said, are conducted to prevent coercion or unethical transactions, while also briefing all parties on their rights and duties.

He expressed optimism that the course would strengthen the adoption system in Sarawak and ensure better protection for children throughout the process.

For the record, Isa was presented with the MCi Award last October during the Sarawak Civil Service Innovation Convention Award (SCSICA) 2024.

The ceremony was officiated by Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Muhamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
