 Workers’ quarters blaze leaves 52 homeless

MIRI: Fifty-two foreigners, including 17 children, were left with nothing but clothes on their backs after a block of workers’ quarters at Linau Mewah Estate, Batu 6 1/2, Jalan Miri-Bintulu was razed to the ground this morning (Jan 9).

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident as all of the occupants evacuated to safety.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Lopeng and Miri central stations were dispatched to the scene, about 13km away, after receiving a distress call at 10.12 am.

Upon arrival, they found that the 10-door block had been completely engulfed by the fire. They then put out the blaze with water sourced from their fire truck.

After the flames were brought under control at 11.35 am, overhaul works were carried out to ensure that there was no risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 2.10 pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred were still under investigation at press time.
