KUCHING: Morning walkers at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Park have come together to brighten up the area by funding and donating five solar lights, which will later be installed by the council.
The council’s Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng described this initiative as a meaningful Christmas and New Year gift as well as reflecting the community’s commitment to improving public spaces.
“This is what we’ve been emphasising as a city council, the city belongs to everyone, not just the council.
“So that’s why we came up with the slogan of your city, my city, our city,” he said in a press conference during the handover of five solar lights held at his office on Thursday.
The donation stemmed from concerns raised by regular park users about certain dark spots within the park.
Instead of waiting for the council’s next funding cycle, the group decided to act immediately through crowdfunding.
Wee added that currently experts are reviewing the overall lighting design to ensure the park is equally attractive at night as it is during the day.
The effort is especially appreciated by senior citizens, many of whom frequent the park as early as 3 am or 4 am for exercise.
Following this initiative, Wee also shared plans to add a library within MBKS park, creating a space for both children and seniors to read and spend time together, similar to the one in Hui Sing Park.
Retired teachers have volunteered to provide educational activities, making it a hub for learning and community bonding.
“This effort symbolises the unity and sense of belonging within our community. It’s a step forward for Sarawak’s future, showing how we can achieve nation-building by working together,” he said.
