KUCHING: The Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities at Universiti Sarwak Malaysia (UNIMAS) recently transcended the confines of their lecture halls and textbooks to impart the spirit of Christmas to three single mothers and their children.
In a transformative initiative dubbed ‘Project Care’, four outstanding final-year students joined forces with Hope Place Kuching to rally financial support for single mothers in need.
Under the resonant theme, ‘Your Contribution, Their Strength’, the initiative sought to kindle a culture of generosity and communal support, aiming to ease the burdens carried by single mothers, as articulated in a poignant press release by HOPE Place.
The campaign kicked off in November, with the students tirelessly fundraising on campus. Just days before Christmas, they embarked on a heartfelt journey to the residences of three underserved single mothers.
Infusing a dose of festive merriment, the UNIMAS students bedecked the homes of these deserving recipients with Christmas embellishments, alongside gifting each family a special ‘love gift box’.
These thoughtfully curated boxes brimmed with essential food supplies, household necessities, elegant scarves for the women, and tantalising festive treats. Complementing these offerings, Hope Place generously provided Christmas presents for the children, ensuring smiles and warmth abounded.
Dr Athirah Azhar, an esteemed lecturer from the Faculty of Social Science & Humanities, personally bestowed the ‘love gift box’ upon each single mother, embodying compassion and solidarity.
The students shared that the core objectives of ‘Project Care’ were not only to uplift the spirits of the community but also to provide much-needed emotional and social bolstering, fostering the growth of essential soft skills among those navigating adversity.
Richard, a dedicated 22-year-old student deeply engaged in the project, expressed, “This Christmas, we aspire to not only spread joy but also to extend moral support and fortify the bonds of community among those weathering life’s hardships.”
