KUCHING: The columbarium project under the management of St Thomas Cathedral is now 60 per cent complete, according to Right Reverend Datuk Danald Jute.
The Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei said the facility will house between 9,000 to 14,000 niches for the ashes of the deceased upon completion.
However, he said the progress has been slow due to the church’s management overseeing two other projects simultaneously.
“The progress is a bit slow because the resources are being shared among them (the projects).
“However, all three projects are expected to be completed simultaneously,” he said when met by media during the Christmas Open House at the Bishop’s House, Jalan McDougall, behind St Thomas’s Cathedral here today (Dec 25).
Apart from the columbarium, the church is also constructing a youth centre and a kindergarten.
“Both projects are progressing well, with the youth centre at 60 per cent completion and the kindergarten slightly behind at 50 per cent.
“We expect all the structures to be ready by the end of next year,” he said.
While the columbarium building is expected to be completed earlier, Danald noted that additional work is needed to construct and install the niches.
Despite the shared resources, he assured that timelines for all three projects remain on track with no significant delays reported.
