KUCHING: Sarawakians have been called to continue upholding the spirit of unity, mutual respect, and harmony during this festive season as Christians celebrate Christmas.
In his 2024 Christmas message, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that unity and cooperation had enabled the Sarawak government to develop the state and defend the rights of the Land of the Hornbill.
“Our ongoing struggle to restore and safeguard Sarawak’s rights does not signify greed or a tendency towards conflict. All our actions are grounded in the rule of law. Therefore, this Christmas, let us take a moment to reflect and renew our resolve to remain united in facing the challenges ahead,” he said.
He then reflected that it has been a tradition in Sarawak for its people to visit the homes of friends or acquaintances during Christmas, regardless of religion, race, or background. “This value is deeply cherished and cultivated within Sarawak’s society over generations, a legacy passed down to us by those who came before.
“Regardless of our religious beliefs or perspectives on certain issues, let us never set aside the value of mutual respect as fellow ‘Anak Sarawak’ in our interactions at all times.
“As the saying goes, ‘Even the tongue gets bitten,’ so do we, humans with diverse temperaments and differences.
“Yet, we must always remain rational in our actions and avoid creating situations that could disrupt the strong unity we have built over the years,” he said.
As the chairman of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Abang Johari noted that he had witnessed the Christmas festivities in the state.
“In Sarawak, the pre-Christmas period creates a lively and cheerful atmosphere, especially with Christmas decorations in shopping malls and Christian groups organizing parades and singing Christmas carols.
“I am confident that various spiritual activities are also being held in churches to commemorate this significant occasion for the Christian community,” he said.
He mentioned that on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Christians would gather in churches to attend prayer services.
“On Christmas Day, they will also host open houses to welcome visits from family members, friends, and acquaintances in a warm and friendly setting,” he said.
He hoped that all Christians in Sarawak would be at peace and comfort with their families and friends.
“I understand that Christmas signifies joy and brings a renewed sense of hope to Christians. Therefore, I deeply wish that our Christian friends will celebrate this year’s Christmas in an atmosphere of joy while embracing the true meaning of Christmas according to Christian teachings.
“On behalf of myself and my wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, I extend our heartfelt Christmas greetings to all Christians in Sarawak and wish all Sarawakians a happy and prosperous New Year 2025,” said Abang Johari.
