KUCHING: A man was sentenced to three months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here, effective today (Dec 24), after pleading guilty to filing a false report regarding the murder of Nurul Ashikin Lan, 28.
The accused, Zakwan Mokhtar, 23, an e-hailing driver, made the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
According to the false report filed by the accused, on Dec 5 at around 11 pm, Zakwan claimed to have taken the victim, fondly known as Amoy, to meet a man.
After waiting for a long time, the accused left Nurul Ashikin with the man and went home.
The next morning, around 10 am, the accused discovered he was being accused on Facebook of abducting the victim.
Feeling anxious and scared due to the social media attention, the accused filed a false police report to deny the allegations.
As a result, the accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing false information.
According to earlier media reports, the accused was arrested on Dec 14 following a police report regarding Nurul Ashikin’s disappearance after going out with him.
