MIRI: Access to clean water is a fundamental right, yet many communities face challenges in ensuring safe and potable water.
In an initiative to address this issue, the Water Purification Awareness Programme at SK Kuala Baram recently educated students and teachers on simple, effective methods for accessing clean water, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
Supported by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), the programme was a dynamic blend of interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and engaging educational sessions.
Spearheaded by Dr Muhammad Noor Hazwan Jusoh, a lecturer in the Civil and Construction Engineering Department at Curtin Malaysia, the initiative also saw significant contributions from Prof Tony Hadibarata and Dr Paran Gani, alongside a dedicated team of postgraduate students – Dr Muhammad Noor Hazwan Jusoh,
The programme captivated the students by teaching them about water sources, contamination risks, and health hazards posed by unsafe water.
Through hands on activities, they discovered effective water purification techniques using materials like sand, gravel, and activated charcoal – methods that are both accessible and practical.
“This initiative equips young learners with the knowledge to protect their health and appreciate the importance of clean water. It’s inspiring to see how engaged and enthusiastic the students were,” said Dr Hazwan.
A quiz at the programme’s conclusion revealed a significant improvement in the students’ understanding of water filtration, demonstrating the effectiveness of the initiative in raising awareness and knowledge.
The school’s headmaster, Nancy Opi, commended the programme, noting its alignment with the school’s educational goals.
“It has proven valuable for our students and teachers. We look forward to welcoming Curtin Malaysia for similar initiatives in the future,” she said.
Dr Hazwan’s team’s efforts, supported by Prof Hadibarata and Dr Paran, underscore Curtin Malaysia’s dedication to advancing community wellbeing through education.
“Programmes like this lay the groundwork for sustainable solutions to water access challenges in rural areas,” said Dr Hazwan.
The Water Purification Awareness Programme not only imparted crucial skills but also inspired the next generation to champion sustainable water practices – a mission that resonates deeply with Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to community engagement and empowerment.
