SIBU: Athletes who participate in international competitions must work hard and showcase the spirit of unity among Sarawak’s diverse communities, said Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said that the opportunity to compete at the international level is a priceless honour.

“Regardless of the results achieved, the athletes will remain the pride of Sibu and role models for the people of Sarawak.

“Let your talent and charisma be recognised at the international level. Be humble in victory and steadfast in defeat. No matter the result, you will remain a symbol of our pride,” he said at the flag handover ceremony for four Rajang Taekwondo Club (RTC) athletes representing Malaysia at the 9th Asian Taekwondo Invitational Championship in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, from Dec 28 to 30.

Tiong, who is also Bintulu Member of Parliament, was represented by Councillor Paul Teo, who delivered his speech on his behalf.

Also present at the ceremony, held at the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong branch premises yesterday (Dec 24), were Councillor Simon Wee and RTC Head Coach Thomas Tang.

The four athletes competing are Tie Tong Siong, 22; Tiffany Yew, 22; Benson Tie, 16; and Jackson Lee, 18. They will be accompanied by three coaches and are scheduled to depart for China on Dec 27.

The Dudong assemblyman praised RTC for their contributions to promoting and developing taekwondo in Sarawak.

“RTC has not only succeeded in producing excellent athletes but has also provided a platform for young people to pursue their dreams,” he said.

He expressed his appreciation for RTC’s success in winning eight gold medals and securing third place at the National Taekwondo Championship in Kuala Lumpur last August.

“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all RTC members and reflects the extraordinary spirit of the sports community in Sibu,” he added.

Commenting on this year’s participation, Tiong highlighted the challenges faced by the athletes, including rigorous daily training and strong guidance from their coaches.

“We greatly appreciate your sacrifices and efforts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tang expressed hope that the athletes would bring home at least one medal.

According to him, this year’s competition will be challenging as top athletes from countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines are expected to participate.

“These four athletes have been specially selected and will be making their international debut. The pressure will be high, but I am confident they will rise to the occasion and achieve success,” Tang added.
