SIBU: Fourteen non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the Bawang Assan area were presented with Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants totalling RM46,500 today (Dec 24).
Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, attended the event to hand over the grants to the respective NGOs, including the Social Club and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), at the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Bawang Assan branch premises in Jalan Wawasan.
Speaking prior to the cheque presentation, Wong said, “There are too many applications — hundreds of them — for me to decide who to give and how much to give.
“I can only do my best to help those in need. I am sure what is given today may not fully satisfy the applicants, but they can always apply again next year.
“I hope they will understand, as there are many applications.”
Wong, who is also PDP senior vice president, said that the presentation marked the seventh time he had distributed MRP grants since joining PDP earlier this year.
He added that, as he is entitled to RM2 million in MRP funds annually, the funds will be distributed gradually until the full amount is allocated.
Among those present were Joshua Ting Fu Ying, political secretary to the Sarawak Premier; PDP Bawang Assan branch chairman Penghulu Wong Hwa; Penghulu Teo Nging Poh; and Kapitan Goh Kee Seng.
