KUCHING: Christians are called to walk humbly, to care for the needy, care for the animals and the environment that God has created and entrusted to its people as faithful stewards of creation.

In his Christmas message, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia president Archbishop Datuk Dr Simon Poh said Christmas opens the doors to hope and life, and just as Jesus comes to humanity, born humbly in a stable over 2,000 years ago, and was welcomed by the animals and shepherds.

He said ‘Christmas isn’t Christmas till it happens in your heart’, therefore Malaysians are urged to embody the spirit of Christmas through action such as serving the poor and needy.

“Let’s also give generously in fund to alleviate poverty, contribute to victims of natural disasters, floods or fire, and commit to make education available for all children.

“In addition, reject extremism and fundamentalism in our land, seek to dialogue, engage and listen to each other, celebrate over common fellowship meals, and host ‘open house’ for Christmas and on other festival dates.

“Moreover, it is important to collaborate for the common good of Malaysia as well as pray for both spiritual and political leaders of our nation,” he said.

He quote the Bible, Luke 2:14 , reminding the faithful of the angels’ proclamation: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to people of goodwill”.

Thus, he said it is important to foster goodwill, friendship, and mutual respect, especially in multicultural Malaysia.

“In Malaysia and in Sarawak, we live as neighbours with various faiths and cultures.

“In relating to each other as friends and neighbours, we realise that there are many things that we have in common – our hopes, desire for our families, giving a helping hand to each other as neighbours, and sharing our duties,” he said.

He also said visiting each other is common especially during Raya, Chinese New Year, Gawai, Deepavali, Wesak Day and Christmas.

“As ‘anak-anak’ Sarawak, we are invited to see the goodness and goodwill of friendship and work together to bless one another in our land,” he said.
