KUCHING: Thamaraj Vasudevan has etched his name in the annals of history, becoming the first Malaysian Indian to secure a gold medal at the World Pencak Silat Championships held at the National Art Centre in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sunday.

The 25-year-old athlete triumphed in the men’s Putera free category, defeating Khudoyberdiev Diyorbek of Uzbekistan in a gripping final.

Thamaraj’s victory marked a significant achievement not only for him but for Malaysia, as he became the first Malaysian Indian to claim a world title in this prestigious martial art.

The Malaysian Pencak Silat Federation (PESAKA) confirmed that the national team delivered an outstanding performance at the Championships, bringing home a total of six gold, nine silver, and four bronze medals.

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, extended his congratulations to Thamaraj, lauding his historic achievement and the remarkable accomplishments of the Malaysian team.

“I was thrilled to witness Thamaraj’s victory.

A total of six gold, nine silver, and four bronze medals were won by our national heroes.

“His success in Abu Dhabi was a proud moment for the nation. His performance in the final was nothing short of exceptional. He truly exemplified the spirit of Malaysian excellence,” said Zahid in a statement on social media.

The Deputy Prime Minister also commended the overall success of the national silat squad, which included the senior team securing six golds, nine silvers, and four bronzes, while the junior team added five golds, four silvers, and four bronzes to the tally.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the entire silat squad for their dedication and outstanding performances.

“This achievement was just the beginning, and I look forward to many more victories for Malaysia in the future,” he continued.

Zahid also took the opportunity to thank Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, President of the Malaysia National Silat Federation (Pesaka), for his invaluable contributions to the sport and the continued success of Malaysian silat on the international stage.
