KUCHING: The Safe City Programme by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) ensures the safety of the community in the city.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki added that the initiative aimed to solve unhealthy social issues, including drug abuse, at hot spots in the city.

“This effort ensures that the community in the city can live comfortably without fear, especially at night.

“We also plan to add more streetlights in areas where they are needed. This programme is already in place. With such projects, we can prevent abandoned houses from being broken into.

“Additional measures to improve safety in the areas will also be carried out, including the installation of pedestrian path separation from motorised traffic and other improvements,” he said during the Safe City Project site visit at Taman Rekreasi, Komuniti Happy Garden Jalan Nanas yesterday (Dec 23).

These were also part of the efforts to prevent snatch thefts.

“At least, when we install these dividers, they can serve as barriers or protection,” he added.

Ibrahim further clarified that the funding for the implementation of this programme had been allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN), with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) acting as the coordinating agency.

“The implementing agency is the local authority (PBT), and in Satok, the implementing agency is DBKU.

“Although this programme has been in existence since 2011, InshaAllah, next year, with the funding from KDN, this project will continue to be implemented across Kuching City, and in Satok, it may involve Jalan Haji Taha,” he said.

“For the record, DBKU has been involved in the Safe City Programme since 2011 and it previously carried out similar initiatives at Kampung Kudei and Jalan Nanas Barat in 2018.

In 2024, the areas approved for the implementation of this programme include Jalan Nanas, covering Jalan Rubber Barat, Jalan Nanas Barat, Jalan Intan, Eastern Park, Evergreen Garden, Lorong Intan Tengah, and Jalan Green, with a total allocation of RM332,099 for the Safe City Programme.

Among the three elements under the Safe City measures completed in 2024 are the separation of pedestrian pathways from motorised traffic on Jalan Nanas, installation of eight bollards at Komuniti Happy Garden and the installation of crime warning signs and emergency contact numbers at Jalan Nanas.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim, who was accompanied by DBKU mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman, also inspected infrastructure projects related to the drainage system around Jalan Nanas.

Two of these projects were completed last year, including the upgrading of the drainage system at Lorong Off Jalan Nanas Barat and the installation of drainage covers at Jalan Nanas.

Another project, the upgrading of the drainage system at Jalan Nanas Barat, Kampung Kudei Lama, is expected to be completed in January next year.
