MELAKA: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi visited the grave of Sarawakian warrior Datu Patinggi Abdul Gapur at the Tok Gambon Muslim Cemetery.
Accompanying them during the visit were Melaka mufti Datuk Abdul Halim Tawil, and descendants of the late Abdul Gapur.
The solemn occasion began with Abdul Halim leading the recitation of a doa, offering prayers for the soul of the revered warrior.
Following the prayers, Wan Junaidi and Fauziah performed the symbolic rituals of sprinkling water over the grave — a gesture signifying purification and respect — and strewing flower petals to add a serene touch to the ceremony.
The visit reflects the enduring legacy of past leaders whose contributions and sacrifices have profoundly shaped Sarawak’s history.
Abdul Gapur was a prominent Sarawakian warrior and a noble of Kuching before the Brookes’ arrival in Sarawak. He fought valiantly alongside Syarif Mashor against the Brookes in the 1860s.
A keyfigure in Sarawak’s early development, Abdul Gapur championed the welfare of the community and worked tirelessly to advance the state’s progress. His legacy of leadership and dedication continues to inspire future generations.
