SIBU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) branch here carried out the disposal of 481.13 kilogrammes of edible bird nests, estimated to be worth RM400,000 on Saturday.
In a statement, SFC said the operation was conducted at the Tun Ahmad Zaidi Nature Reserve, starting at 8 am and concluding at 12.10 pm.
“The operation involved eight SFC officers, four Wildlife Guardian Rangers (WGR), and was witnessed by two officers from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),” SFC said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
The statement also noted that the bird nests were disposed of through incineration after obtaining approval from the Controller of Wildlife, Abang Arabi Abang Aimran.
“This disposal is in accordance with Section 34(b) and Section 33(2)(a) of the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998, which provides for legal action against individuals found in possession of, selling, or purchasing bird nests from illegal sources.
“Violations of this law can result in fines of up to RM10,000,” the statement added.
SFC emphasised that this disposal operation reflects the authorities’ commitment to enforcing wildlife protection regulations in Sarawak and ensuring compliance with laws related to natural resources.
