KUCHING: Investigations into the Jalan Setia Raja murder case, where a nearly decomposed body was discovered in a drain, are nearing completion.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said this when asked for updates on the murder case at the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) here, Wednesday (Dec 18).

He also confirmed that the motive behind the murder was the suspect’s intention to take the deceased’s gold necklace and earrings, and pawn it for money to go watch a football match abroad.

“The 23-year-old suspect, who is under remand until Dec 22, has confessed to his involvement in the murder. He even pointed at the location where the body was dumped.

“Police have been gathering evidence at the scene since the discovery of the body, which was in an incomplete state. Recent findings include teeth, hair clump and other forensic samples.

“Currently, we are awaiting the results of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test for the deceased’s identity,” Comm Mancha said.

He added that the identification process has been challenging due to the advanced state of decomposition of the body, which was found near a garbage dump site.

The condition of the body made physical identification difficult, even for the family.

Meanwhile, Kuching police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The public are urged not to speculate or spread any false information as it could disrupt ongoing investigation.
