KUCHING: Santubong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri aspires to see Santubong become a world-class tourism destination.
Thus it is important to safeguard the area’s unique culture and arts, she said, pointing out that this is a valuable asset.
“By leveraging the natural beauty of Mount Santubong and historical sites, we can attract international tourists,” she said during the 2024 Santubong Day programme at the Community Hall there, today (Dec 14).
Nancy, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister also pointed out the potential of tourism and the creative industries to enhance the local economy and improve living standards.
“Besides that, it is important that we ensure all groups, including women and youth, are given opportunities to contribute to Santubong’s growth,” she said.
She added that Santubong is an area rich in history and stories.
“As a trading hub from the 7th to the 13th century, it attracted merchants from China, India, and Arabia. The discovery of artefacts here confirms its significance in the history of global trade.
“Today, Santubong has evolved into a tourism destination with immense potential, offering a variety of homestays, hotels, and resorts.
“Thus, with its natural beauty, I am confident that Santubong can become a world-class tourism destination,” she said.
Meanwhile, the programme was organised by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Santubong Constituency Service Office in collaboration with the area’s Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), the Kampung Santubong Friendly Neighbourhood Committee (KRT), Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and other agencies.
The purpose of the programme was to encourage a sense of pride in the history, culture, and identity of the Santubong community; enhancing tourism appeal; preserving cultural heritage; safeguarding traditions, arts, and heritage cuisine to ensure they endure through time; boosting economic opportunities as well as strengthening community unity.
