SERIAN: The Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) has launched a Road Safety Campaign aimed at promoting safety awareness for travelers along the Pan Borneo Highway during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
The campaign, in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Sarawak, Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD), Serian Resident’s Office, Serian District Office, and Unit Komunikasi Awam Sarawak (UKAS), aims to enhance road safety awareness for users traveling along the Pan Borneo Highway during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Sarawak PWD director Dr Cassidy Morris said that the campaign was also organised to elevate safety standards to a higher level, reflecting the department’s commitment to ensuring road users are well-informed about safety.
“We understand that the Pan Borneo Highway is relatively new, and there have been various comments regarding safety features such as P-turns and others.
“This campaign aims to raise awareness about road safety on the highway. Even though the road is in good condition, motorists must remain cautious and adapt to features like P-turns, junctions, and flyovers. Do not speed,” he said when met after attending the Road Safety Campaign held at the Serian By-Pass here today (Dec 14).
According to PDRM statistics, accidents along the Pan Borneo Highway have been on the rise, particularly during festive and school holiday periods.
Excessive speeding and traffic offenses at P-turns were identified as key contributing factors.
As part of the campaign, 200 goodie bags were distributed to road users at the Shell Station, containing safe driving pamphlets and light refreshments.
Motorists also received brief reminders from authorities on traffic regulations.
The campaign was supported by Pan Borneo Highway’s maintenance team, PBH Asset Management Sdn Bhd, and Shell Station (POWE Serian Sdn Bhd).
Also present were Sarawak PWD deputy director (Infrastructure) Wisil Lichok, PWD senior principal assistant director (Pan Borneo Highway) Indra Sakti Haron, Serian PWD engineer Chiresly Francis Kureng, Serian Resident’s representative Wee Chung Yee, and Serian District Council secretary Tay Guan Huat.
