KUCHING: The Ops Khas Motosikal enforcement operation in Sarawak has resulted in the seizure of 3,072 vehicles, says Road Transport Department (RTD) senior director Muhammad Kifli Hassan.
He said the seizure comprised 2,663 units of motorcycles, while other offences include 65 individuals testing positive for drugs, comprising 35 motorcyclists and 18 drivers of other vehicles.
The operation in Sarawak, launched on yesterday (Dec 13) at Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yaakub, is aimed at curbing road violations and enhancing safety, particularly during the festive season.
“The operation, running nationwide from November 1 to December 31, has seen over 828,358 vehicles inspected, of which 400,352 were motorcycles, representing 41.3 per cent of the total inspections.
“Out of this, 55,257 motorcycles faced enforcement actions for various offenses, comprising 54 per cent of the total cases,” said Kifli.
Kifli said the department’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug use among drivers, stating, “Drivers under the influence pose a significant risk to themselves and other road users.”
Meanwhile Sarawak RTD director Norizan Jili said the operation in Sarawak has identified lack of a valid driver’s license as the most prevalent offense, with 19,388 summonses issued to motorcycle riders statewide.
He highlighted the importance of proper licensing, urging unlicensed riders to participate in the MyLesen programme, an initiative designed to assist B40 communities in obtaining affordable driving licenses.
“Unlicensed riders often lack adequate road safety knowledge, increasing the risk of accidents. Through MyLesen, we aim to educate and empower our young riders,” Norizan said.
With Christmas approaching, RTD plans to intensify enforcement, particularly at express bus stations, ensuring drivers are drug-free. Collaborations with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will enhance these efforts.
