KOTA PADAWAN: The Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) is on high alert, bracing for potential floods during the northeast monsoon season.
PMC chairman Tan Kai said that the Kuching Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) is ready to mobilise its members if flood warnings are issued.
“As a local council and a member of the DDMC, we must be prepared and await their call. If necessary, we will deploy our personnel to affected areas,” he said after handing over a Letter of Intent for a temporary recycling lot to the Tzu Chi Foundation Kuching at the PMC Committee Room today (Dec 13).
When asked about other potential flood hotspots beyond Batu Kawa, Tan said that climate change has made it difficult to predict specific locations.
“Rainfall patterns have become unpredictable. Some areas may flood suddenly but only briefly. The affected areas can shift depending on the intensity and duration of rainfall,” he said.
Tan added that Batu Kawa remains a significant flood hotspot due to ongoing development in the area.
He urged residents to stay vigilant and follow instructions from authorities in case of flooding.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also chairs the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), recently stated that all agencies are on high alert to handle the anticipated prolonged wet season.
To support disaster relief efforts, 661 temporary relief centres (PPS) are available statewide to accommodate flood victims.
Additionally, 7,507 personnel from various agencies across Sarawak have been mobilised to ensure readiness for the monsoon season.
