KUCHING: The Adult Literacy Programme at Kampung Haji Baki Resource Centre is helping 12 participants from the village combat illiteracy and enhance their quality of life.
Organised by the Sarawak State Library, the programme aims to teach reading literacy to adults aged 15 and above who struggle with basic skills.
It is implemented in collaboration with Public Libraries, Village Libraries, Digital Community Centres, and State Assembly representatives to ensure comprehensive coverage across Sarawak.
The programme focuses on the “3M” skills: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, using the Adult Literacy Activity Guide and Blok Hurufku Sayang modules developed by the programme team.
Beyond literacy and writing, the modules also incorporate digital literacy components, which are managed by librarians from the Sarawak State Library.
Running from Sept 30 to Dec 31, 2024, the sessions are held twice weekly for three hours, led by two appointed instructors.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang visited the programme on Dec 9 and commended the dedication of the Sarawak State Library and the participants.
“The Adult Literacy Programme is an initiative by the Sarawak State Library to promote lifelong learning among the Sarawak community.
“It aims to help adults and youth who have yet to master literacy skills achieve basic reading and writing proficiency. The programme not only addresses illiteracy in Sarawak but also provides lifelong learning opportunities to ensure adults can contribute to and participate in their communities.
“Most importantly, it seeks to instil confidence and foster respect for adult learners within society,” he said in a statement.
He also expressed hopes that such programmes can be expanded to other villages to ensure inclusivity in Sarawak’s development.
