KUCHING: The premiere of “Dreamweaver: The Musical” has been described as one of the most entertaining musical theatre productions in recent memory.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said he was deeply moved by the storyline.
“Apart from being entertaining, it is also a touching story about a weaver and her dream of achieving great success while preserving her cultural heritage.
“I found it very creative, especially in terms of the setup and the seamless transitions between scenes in the play.
“It was truly courageous of the production crew to pull this off in such a short amount of time. On behalf of myself and Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, I congratulate everyone involved,” he said during a press conference after attending the premiere of the musical at the Auditorium, Old Courthouse, yesterday (Dec 11).
On another note, director Ambrose Eng shared that he was initially terrified hours before the opening night.
“As the person behind this musical, I had no prior experience to fall back on, which is where the fear came from.
“However, having a supportive team that trusts one another to get things done made all the difference. It became less of a terrifying endeavour and more of an enjoyable moment shared with friends and family,” he said.
The ongoing musical, which debuted on Wednesday, will run until January 5, 2025, with a total of 20 performances scheduled during this period.
“Dreamweaver: The Musical” follows the journey of a young weaver from a small Sarawak village who discovers the sentient magic within her cloth.
This revelation sets her on a mystical adventure to revive her struggling business, preserve her cultural heritage, and unite her community against modern challenges.
The narrative seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with mystical realism, featuring incredible songs, stunning visual effects, and performances by a talented cast, including local weavers.
