KUCHING: A total of 250 students from various schools in town took part in a one-day Student Sustainability Symposium at the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia Sarawak branch headquarters here Saturday (Dec 7).
Organised by OCIM Sdn Bhd (OCIM) in collaboration with the movement, the symposium with the theme “Save Our Planet, Save Our Home” was aimed at empowering young people through education and hands-on experiences in sustainability.
“The initiative aimed to build a strong understanding of environmental issues and to inspire community actions while cultivating a generation of environmentally conscious leaders equipped with knowledge and skills to promote sustainable practices.
“Officers from Natural Resources Environmental Board (NREB) and OCIM conducted briefings for the participants where they gained experience in practical environmental protection methods such as recycling and reusing while experiencing the value of collaborating with one another to achieve better outcomes in sustainability efforts,” OCIM said in a press release.
One of the event highlights was the inauguration of OCIM’s completed solar school project at the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia Sarawak branch headquarters.
“This newly installed solar power generation system is part of OCIM’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
“Launched in Dec 2023, the programme has already benefited three other premises which are the Perkata Special School (Dec 2023), Riam Road Secondary School, Miri (March 2024), and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Seberang, Lawas (Sept 2024).
“This CSR project has been implemented by OCI Holdings, the parent company that has wholly owned OCI M since 2013. It initially benefited 1,000 schools in South Korea before being expanded to Malaysia and adopted by OCI M,” it said.
Present were OCIM’s senior director and head of sustainability division Dr Kim Soo Yeon and Girl Guides Association of Malaysia Sarawak branch vice president Annie Sim.
