MATU: Sarawak holds great potential to become a leader in the fisheries industry.

Chairman of the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), Muhammad Faiz Fadzil, stated this, citing the state’s abundant marine resources.

“To realise this vision of becoming a leading state in fisheries, fishermen play a crucial role. They must adopt a mindset change, particularly in daring to venture into downstream business activities,” he said.

He said this during the Majlis Rahmah Mesra Madani event with fishermen from the PNK Matu Daro yesterday.

Elaborating further, he said LKIM would continue to focus on efforts to strengthen the fishery business in Sarawak.

He explained that this initiative aims to position Sarawak as the leading state in fisheries in Malaysia.

In this regard, Faiz announced that the handover of the PNK Matu Daro Administrative Office would support fishermen in managing their operations.

“This particularly includes organising planned economic projects to ensure smooth implementation.

“Additionally, it will assist other businesses, such as marketing the products made by fishermen in this area,” he added.

He also highlighted that one of the main challenges faced by most fishermen is product marketing.

For this reason, LKIM is planning to assist fishermen in the areas involved, tailoring strategies to their capabilities.

“In Peninsular Malaysia, we have fishermen’s retail stores specifically for marketing their products.

“God willing, once the plans are successfully executed, we aim to expand these fishermen’s retail stores to Sarawak to help our fishermen market their products,” he concluded.
