KOTA SAMARAHAN: Over 1,100 people took part in the Segulai Sejalai Sehat Sarawak Fun Run, organised by the Postgraduate Student Association of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) recently.
Held in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, the event aimed to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
The fun run, officiated by Unimas Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit who applauded the initiative and encouraged greater participation in the future.
“Let’s aim for even more runners next year, including individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes, to expand the reach and impact of this important cause,” he said in a statement.
Association president, Dr. Simon Channing Nub, expressed his satisfaction with the smooth execution of the programme.
“We are delighted to achieve our target of more than 1,000 runners standing in solidarity against diabetes. This event has successfully conveyed an important public health message,” he said.
In addition to the run, the event featured a World Diabetes Day Awareness exhibition, offering free health screenings conducted by PMG Healthcare and the National Kidney Foundation.
Visitors could also check for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) station provided participants with hands-on training in life-saving techniques, while health promotion booths by the Samarahan Divisional Health Office and the Asean Medical Students Association (AMSA) further enhanced public health education.
Faculty Dean Professor Dr Asri Said commended the students’ dedication and professionalism in organising the event.
“Through determination and teamwork, these students transformed challenges into opportunities, creating a successful initiative that not only raised awareness about diabetes but also nurtured their leadership and problem-solving skills,” he remarked.
