MIRI: Sarawak is considering establishing a gas terminal in Kuching to capitalise on the area’s gas potential.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state will collaborate with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and other strategic partners to look for the gas that is available in Kuching.
“Besides Miri, Kuching also has gas. So what we do from that, we set up our own gas terminal in Kuching as well as the new deep-sea port,” he said.
He said this during the ground-breaking ceremony of the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant here today (Nov 30).
Abang Johari further said the new gas hub will be linked to Bintulu hub and will have the same power generation in Bintulu like the Miri CCGT Power Plant.
“This one will provide 500 megawatt (MW) each, meaning it will be generating 1,500MW and with this one (Miri CCGT Power Plant) generating 500MW, you will have 2GW,” he said.
On another note, he said the state has committed RM300 million for the development of the Miri Port.
“In other words, Miri now got the port. You got the power. Now it is up to the people in the northern part to work hard and increase your income,” he said.
