KOTA SAMARAHAN: Tournaments such as the 6th University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) International Open Chess Championship 2024 are important steps to bring chess to greater heights.

Deputy Minister of Urban Development, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the tournament serves as a way to gain recognition and provide inspiration and motivation to chess enthusiasts in Malaysia.

“Especially now, chess is gaining more popularity among Malaysians, and the number of tournaments being organised is growing rapidly.

“I am confident that organising such tournaments can serve as an excellent platform to promote a sporting culture, particularly chess, among enthusiasts.

“Chess has its own unique appeal, attracting players from diverse backgrounds and countries,” he said during the closing of the tournament here on Sunday (Nov 17).

He added that through such international-level tournaments, chess players from around the world can gather, compete, and test their skills.

“Beyond that, participants also have the opportunity to build camaraderie and establish new networks with people of various nationalities.

“They can exchange ideas, techniques, and experiences, making this competition not just about rivalry but also a learning opportunity,” he said.

Len Talif also expressed support for the organising of such tournaments, as they prove that chess is more than just a game as it is an art that sharpens intelligence, quick thinking, and mental acuity.

“With a focus on mental strength rather than physical ability, chess is suitable for all age groups, from children as young as five to seniors over 80 years old.

“Apart from testing strategies, this sport also fosters friendship and strengthens bonds of brotherhood.

“I hope this annual chess tournament will continue to be consistently organised by the Unimas Chess Club.

“Besides discovering new talents and fostering relationships among participants, this tournament can elevate Unimas’ name on the global stage — not only as an institution of knowledge but also as a centre of international sports excellence, further enhancing its reputation and image globally,” he said.
