SIBU: Motorists have been urged to prioritise road safety by adhering to traffic laws and avoiding reckless behaviour that could lead to tragedies.

Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing made the call following a fatal accident on Monday at Jalan Lada, where a 19-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after being struck by a car.

“I want to urge all road users to learn from this accident.

“We must recognise the importance of adhering to traffic rules, rather than seeking quick convenience and engaging in reckless driving,” he said in a statement.

Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, stressed that if traffic violations at the location persist, he may have no choice but to direct authorities to close the intersection.

“If this inconveniences the public or causes severe traffic congestion, I ask for your understanding, as we will be left with no choice but to safeguard lives on the road.

“This measure, if taken, will solely be for the safety of all road users,” he said.

Tiong stated that the early morning accident was attributed to the driver’s failure to follow traffic regulations, in opting to drive against traffic for convenience.

This led to the fatal collision with the motorcyclist, who was travelling in the correct direction.

“From what I understand, many road users take the risk of driving the wrong way at this intersection, creating a constant hazard and posing a serious threat to road safety,” he said.

He issued a stern reminder to road users to comply with traffic regulations for everyone’s safety.

“For the safety of yourselves and others, please adhere to traffic regulations. Only with everyone’s cooperation can we ensure safe journeys for all,” he said.
