KUCHING: The state government has approved an allocation of RM10 million for the construction of a new academic block and other facilities at SK Tupong Rakyat here.

In making this announcement, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said besides the academic block the project will include a preschool, resource centre and a mini stadium field, providing improved facilities for students and teachers.

He stressed the importance of investing in the future of Sarawak’s children.

“This RM10 million allocation is a step forward in ensuring our children have the best environment to continue their education.

“And thank God our economy is growing. I have been your leader for seven years and Sarawak’s income has doubled with proper economic planning, and we have been able to increase our state’s revenue due to the strong unity of our people in Sarawak.

“When we are united, leaders can think about ways to develop, and the state’s income increases,” he said during the SK Rakyat Tupong’s 75th anniversary celebration at the school here on Wednesday.

Abang Johari also spoke of plans to address land issues concerning the school mini stadium, explaining that part of the land designated for drainage would be repurposed while integrating a water reservoir into the school’s landscape.

“I hope the development of this school can begin next year, as the funds have already been allocated. There is just one issue, which is the mini stadium.

“Part of the land can be taken, but another part is reserved for drainage and irrigation. The stadium can be built, but we’ll have to reduce the size of the water reservoir. The remaining land will go to the school.

“However, I have a new solution. Even though it will be a pond it will also become a beautiful landscape attraction for the school, providing light and fountains. SK Rakyat Tupong could be more attractive with this new approach,” he said.

In conjunction with the anniversary, Abang Johari pledged RM75,000 to the school’s alumni association to support further initiatives for the students.
