MIRI: Fifty-one fire victims at Taman Ceria Bandar Baru Permyjaya, received cash and other forms of assistance from the SUPP Senadin Service Centre, following a devastating fire that razed eight houses on Saturday (Oct 12).
Senadin assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, visited the affected residents to oversee the relief efforts.
He assured that aid, including food, shelter, and school supplies for affected schoolchildren, would be swiftly provided.
“We are mobilising all necessary assistance, and all relevant agencies, including the Welfare Department and the Red Crescent, are on the ground,” said Lee.
“Even though it’s Sunday, we are here to ensure the victims receive help as quickly as possible.”
The fire, which broke out around 3:05 pm on Saturday, completely destroyed six houses and partially damaged two others.
The quick response of the Fire and Rescue Department, including teams from the Lutong, Lopeng, and Miri fire stations, managed to bring the blaze under control.
Henry Jugah, head of the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station, reported that they responded immediately upon receiving the emergency call.
Lee also mentioned that further assistance would be sought from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for those still repaying loans for their properties.
“We will request aid for the victims, including those who have completed their loans and those who are still paying,” he explained.
Among the 51 victims, 16 are schoolchildren, for whom assistance with uniforms and school-related needs will be arranged.
