KUCHING: The 2024 Sarawak Youth Open Wushu Championship has proven to be a valuable platform for young athletes to hone their skills.
Jong Chin Wei, Secretary General of the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS), lauded the fourth edition of the championship for providing crucial tournament experience.
“This is a great opportunity for them as the competition level is not too high, making it ideal for development,” he told Sarawak Tribune at Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 today (Sept 29).
A wushu coach from Bintulu, Jong sent a contingent of 44 young athletes to participate in the championship.
“Our kids from Bintulu can learn a lot by observing other teams and their opponents. For many, this is their first time competing at such a large event,” he said.
Jong, 33, who moved from Miri to Bintulu to establish the Jun Wei Bintulu Wushu Club in 2019, added that the championship is particularly beneficial for young athletes aged 8 to 16, as it allows them to experience the excitement of a major competition.
He thanked Kuching Elite Wushu Club, his club’s affiliate, for their efforts in organising the championship.
“We continue to support this initiative. Although it’s not our federation’s programme, we thank them for creating this platform for all young athletes from Sarawak,” he said.
