KUCHING: Artist Joanne Lau’s solo exhibition, titled “Colourful Echoes,” has achieved unprecedented success as one of Kuching’s top-selling art shows.

After a four-week run, half of the exhibition’s 51 pieces have been sold, generating proceeds that will be partially donated to the new church funds for the Chapel of Mother Mary, the Carmelite Monastery, and the Sarawak Women for Women Society, of which Lau was once the president.

“Art connects people, and the unwavering support of my collectors has tremendously boosted my confidence as an artist on my artistic journey,” Lau expressed in a short yet heartfelt speech at La Promenade Mall’s gallery on Sunday. She extended her gratitude to all her supporters and art collectors, both local and international.

Lau highlighted that “A Painful Heart” garnered the most admiration during the show. According to her, the painting sends a powerful message that it is acceptable to openly discuss one’s struggles and seek healing when experiencing emotional distress. She als

o mentioned that collectors from as far as Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth acquired some of the larger pieces, including the artwork after which the show is named, “Colourful Echoes.”

Lau’s exhibition is believed to be the highest-grossing show at Hoan Gallery, one of the region’s most vibrant art galleries.

“Seeing Lau’s achievements fills me with immense pride,” remarked Hoan Kee Huang, the director of Hoan Gallery. “Her show has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the local art community. None of us artists can recall a recent exhibition where many pieces were sold within such a short period. Lau’s works have resonated with people.”

“Even during the preview period, four pieces were already sold. I do not doubt that Lau is setting a new standard for art and art appreciation in Sarawak. She is not only admired but also an inspiration to many.”
Hoan Gallery has hosted four solo art shows, including a high-profile exhibition featuring the works of Alena Murang, since its establishment in 2021.

The gallery has become a central point for the artistic revival in Sarawak, attracting emerging talents such as Brandon Ritom and sculptor M. Sahzy, who have chosen Hoan Gallery to exhibit and sell their works.

Next on the gallery’s agenda is a solo show featuring the renowned abstract artist David Chew, one of Sarawak’s most celebrated figures in the art world. “Chew is a truly exceptional artist in Sarawak. His works are not only daring but also exceptionally unique. Art enthusiasts are in for a delightful experience when his show opens,” Hoan expressed.

Hoan Gallery’s permanent collection includes works by Leonard Siaw, Stephanie Eng, Foo Syn Choon, Narong Daun, and more. The gallery is open daily with free admission, and all displayed artworks are available for purchase.
