KUCHING: The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2024, to be held from June 29 to 30, at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) is set to be an extraordinary event, with the expected presence of the Sultan of Selangor and the Sultan of Perak.
Chief executive officer (CEO) of the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Sharzede Salleh Askor announced that security would be beefed up this year due to the presence of royalty, with STB’s protocol unit collaborating closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
“Security is definitely top in all our events all these years. But with higher profile people coming in, obviously that would be our top security. We even have a canine every year to make sure we sniff all the things and our festival goers.
“To be honest, the Rainforest event is a non-protocol affair. While we acknowledge the attendance of the royalty, it remains a non-protocol event. Both the PDRM and our protocol office are informed, so everyone is aware,” she said during a press conference after attending the RWMF2024 Sponsors’ Appreciation Day held at Imperial Hotel today (June 19).
Meanwhile, officiating at the programme today, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said this year’s festival, themed “Evolution,” marks its 27th edition after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“A major highlight will be the performance of internationally renowned musician, Kitaro.
“We are honoured to have Mr. Kitaro join us. His participation has significantly boosted ticket sales, surpassing previous records,” Ting noted.
The festival, beginning on June 28, will feature over 150 performers, including more than 70 international artistes, setting a new record for diversity and participation.
“Rainforest World Music Festival attracts people globally to Sarawak. It’s a celebration of music and culture, and we expect another successful year,” he added.
He went on to highlight the festival’s role in promoting social inclusivity and unity. He said this event showcases ‘Unity in Diversity,’ encouraging giving, sharing, and caring for all Sarawakians regardless of race or religion.
Beyond the musical performances, the festival will also feature the Rainforest Youth Summit and various trade fairs and consumer shows, contributing to the local economy and tourism industry.
In a similar development, STB has also signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) in the pursuit to promote tourism in Sarawak. It aims to jointly explore and implement activities using services by MAG for mutual benefits.
“Through a series of joint activities, we aim to foster greater cooperation and mobilise efforts to revive and enhance the country’s tourism industry, with a focus on attracting international visitors. This partnership aligns seamlessly with our ambitious goal for Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” he said.
