KUCHING: Hydrogen has the potential to be an alternative energy to replace the dependence on diesel fuel, says Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier pointed out that if hydrogen can be produced at a lower cost, it can be an alternative to diesel fuel following the issue of increased diesel prices.

“Look for an alternative to replace diesel, then there is no need for subsidies anymore… we are now busy with hydrogen, if you can lower the cost of hydrogen why (do you want to) use diesel again?

“Change to other energy instead of using diesel, automatically the whole problem is solved.”

He said this during a press conference following the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (APGH) 2024 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Monday (June 10).

Explaining further, Abang Johari said that in order to reduce the cost of hydrogen, the use of oil should be stopped.

“Why talk about diesel when we have hydrogen? To reduce the cost of hydrogen, stop using oil, that’s the solution.

“Looking at the current situation where we still use diesel, its price will go up again and more subsidies will be asked for. So, why not just use a cheap alternative energy instead of diesel?”

For the record, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan announced that the federal government has set a new diesel price at RM3.35 per litre.

He said that the price was the market price without subsidies, based on the average for May 2024, according to the automatic pricing mechanism formula.
