KUCHING: The second edition of the Nyamai Sarawak Gastronomy Festival: Malaysia Day Edition is set to take place from September 13 to 15 at Sarawak Cultural Village here.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the event will feature engaging culinary challenges where chefs from diverse backgrounds will showcase their skills and creativity, alongside a mega gastronomy buffet offering the best of Malaysian cuisines.

“The two-day festival will offer free entry to the public, providing an opportunity for families to come together, celebrate and create lasting memories.

“This festival not only celebrates the unity of different ethnicities but also showcases solidarity between various organisations and corporate entities.

“We unite strongly in the spirit of ‘segulai sejalai,’ especially during this Malaysia Day celebration,” she said at a press conference held at SCV today (June 9).

Nancy, who is also Santubong MP and the event’s patron, added that the festival’s “From Farm to Table” concept promotes sustainability and supports local farmers by highlighting the journey of local produce to the table.

Alongside this concept, she said the festival features modern fine dining experiences that fuse traditional flavours with contemporary techniques, offering a unique gastronomic journey.

“This initiative aligns with Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, declared in 2021, underscoring the region’s rich food heritage and positioning it as a global culinary destination,” she added.

Additionally, the event will also feature a variety of engaging activities and competitions, including the Sarawak Ethnic Culinary Challenge, a Cultural Costume Photo Contest, and the Nyamai Treasure Hunt Adventure.

Attendees can also enjoy traditional cooking demonstrations, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) Forum, and a demonstration on sago processing.

Entertainment at the event is equally diverse, with performances by local DJs, busking, cultural performances, and a multi-talent concert.

Also present at the press conference were Kuching North City Council (DBKU) mayor Hilmy Othman, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Datuk Hussain, and Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) CEO Datuk Ismawi Ismuni.
