KUCHING: The residents of our city must be acutely aware of the prevention and control of rabies to minimize the risk of contracting this disease or being infected by rabid dogs.
Rabies is a nervous system disease caused by the rabies virus, which resides in the saliva of animals, particularly dogs and cats. It can be transmitted through bites or if an open wound comes into contact with the infected animal’s saliva.
“This virus can also infect humans if they are bitten or come into direct contact with the saliva of an infected animal, either through wounds or mucous membranes,” stated a recent announcement.
The statement continued, “In case of a dog bite, immediate treatment is strongly recommended to prevent rabies infection. Several symptoms can help identify whether a dog is rabid. These include fear of water, light, and sound, excessive saliva, restlessness, aggression, solitary behaviour, indiscriminate biting, and a tucked tail between the hind legs.”
Therefore, it is essential for city residents to consistently adopt preventive measures to safeguard themselves against the rabies virus.
These measures include washing any bite, scratch, or exposure to animal saliva IMMEDIATELY with running water and soap for at least 15 minutes. Seeking prompt medical attention at the nearest health clinic or hospital is crucial.
Additionally, ensuring complete anti-rabies vaccination as per the medical practitioners’ instructions is vital. Finally, it is advised not to handle any wild animals, including both live and deceased wild dogs and cats.
Hence, we earnestly hope that the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will prioritize the awareness of city residents regarding the grave risks of rabies infection. Together, we can take proactive measures to prevent infection.
“For dog and cat owners, it is crucial to keep your pets within the confines of your homes to prevent viral transmission. Furthermore, ensure that your pets receive preventive anti-rabies vaccinations,” the statement advised.
