KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development will look into a case involving a disabled Grab driver who was allegedly assaulted by a VIP bodyguard in Kuala Lumpur.

Its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said her ministry will examine the case to determine any possible aid for the deaf driver.

“This is not a question of distributing aid because when this happened, we were not there (at the scene). But I have read and heard about this case, and even the Inspector-General of Police have also promised to take action.

“I will get my officers to look into it and see what we can do to help.

“We as a government institution need to make sure what we are going to do is right. We are going to look into this matter to see what we can do,” she said when asked whether her ministry would distribute any aid to the deaf driver during a press conference at Kuching International Airport this afternoon (June 3).

Nancy pointed out that some of her ministry’s policies need to be updated to enable her ministry to distribute aid more efficiently.

“Perhaps there are shortcomings from us that we need to improve, we need to re-examine what is needed.

“Sometimes the policies we have been using for years are no longer relevant in today’s situation, so we will need to review them,” she said.

Last week, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain told a press conference that the case was filed under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

The disabled Grab driver was parked at the hotel entrance as the VIP’s convoy was leaving the property.

It was reported that the man had picked up four passengers at the hotel before one of the VIP bodyguards had knocked on his car door and assaulted him.

The driver sustained soft tissue injuries and was treated in Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Hours after Shuhaily’s press conference, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the case had been amicably resolved.

Rusdi said the driver had lodged a second police report stating that the matter had been resolved amicably and that he had attributed the incident to a misunderstanding and he did not want to pursue the matter.
