MIRI: A tanker and its crew have been detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) within the Miri maritime zone, located 2.1 nautical miles west of Kuala Miri.
The vessel was intercepted early Wednesday morning under suspicion of violating multiple regulations, including the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952, due to the lack of valid documentation.
Additionally, the tanker did not possess a Control Supplies Act (CSA) letter or a Petroleum Development Act (PDA) certificate, as required under the Control of Supplies Act 1963.
Maritime zone director Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad stated in a statement on Wednesday that the detention occurred during the execution of ‘OP PERMAI 01/2019’ and ‘OP TIRIS 3.0’ in Miri waters aimed at ensuring maritime compliance and safety.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered the tanker was operated by a local captain and three Indonesian crew members.
The vessel and crew have been escorted to the Miri vessel detention centre (PTV) jetty for further investigation and action.
Director Mohd Khairol emphasised Maritim Malaysia’s unwavering commitment in enforcing maritime laws, stating that there would be no compromise for those found in violation.
