KUCHING: Data journalism is becoming an essential tool for media organisations striving to provide the public with accurate information.

Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) trainer Munir Anaam said the versatility and efficiency of data journalism support journalists in reporting, fact-checking and gathering information.

“Data is a wonderful tool. It’s like code, photos, videos. Journalists can leverage these tools to enhance their work,” he said during his talk titled “The Rise of Data Journalism and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools,” during the Sarawak Media Conference (SMEC) 2024 at the Riverside Majestic Hotel on Monday.

However, Munir cautioned against an overreliance on artificial intelligence for news production.

“You should befriend AI and use it to produce good work and tell stories better. Do not depend completely on AI,” he added.
