KUCHING: Celebrating a milestone in her artistic journey, Joanne Lau’s first solo exhibition, “Colourful Echoes”, opens at the Hoan Gallery, La Promenade, Kota Samarahan near here on her 70th birthday.
The exhibition spanning from May 18 until June 15, features over 50 acrylic-on-canvas artworks, highlighting six distinctive series: “The Journey of My Life,” “Abstract,” “My Rainforest,” “The Forest,” “The Garden,” and “The New Zealand.”
Each piece reflects her deep connection with nature and her surroundings, capturing beautiful moments and emotional resonance.
“As an artist, I see beauty in everything and my latest piece, “Colourful Echoes” is a very special piece because it contains 70 years of my life’s experiences.
“With the commitment of daily life to society, I truly believe my need to paint is a blessing to be shared with others as art is my passion; I paint when I’m happy and I’m happy when I paint,” Joanne said in a video which was featured at the opening of her exhibition.
All of her paintings are for sale, ranging from RM1,000 to RM16,000 for the most expensive piece, “Colourful Echoes.”
All proceeds will go to the Carmelite Chapel in Kuching, the Chapel of Mother Mary in Stutong, and the Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS).
Joanne started and reignited her passion for painting at the age of 55 after retiring as a teacher in 2009.
Her artistic development was shaped by her mentors, Sum Chiap Hin and David Chew, before she embarked on her own creative journey, ultimately developing her unique semi-abstract impressionist style.
The exhibition opening was attended by Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Ying, the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.
