SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has been urged to intensify its promotion of the town as a major tourist destination in the central region, now that the Pan Borneo highway will be fully completed next year.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the town is poised to become the hub of logistics and road transportation in Sarawak.

“Sibu needs to position itself. SMC needs to do more planning so that Sibu can be the road transportation and logistic hub to serve the whole Sarawak development pace,” he said when met by reporters at the SMC Santai Raya celebration at the Islamic Complex here last night (May 2).

Tiang also stressed the importance of preparing Sibu to accommodate the expected influx of tourists, especially with the introduction of a new flight from Singapore by Scoot starting June.

“So, Sibu also needs to position itself so that the town can be a wonderful place to welcome all these tourists, and this will be a new challenge for Sibu,” he added.

Tiang hoped that SMC would put in greater effort in formulating new policies and boosting promotional activities while collaborating closely with residents.

“This is our time that we need to bring Sibu to a new level. Let’s work together for Sarawak and Sarawak Maju makmur,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the event, Tiang praised SMC for its initiative in fostering inclusivity by hosting events that celebrate diverse cultures and religions.

Also present were Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh, deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley and organising chairman Raden Khairulzaman Raden Bustari.
