KUCHING: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) chief Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is open to a potential merger between PDP and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

Tiong, however, said it is up to PRS, as anyone is free to suggest a merger, stressing that PRS must base its decision on its vision and mission.

“For us (PDP) our door is always open,” he was quoted by the FMT as saying.

Tiong, who also serves as the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, explained the broader aim of such alliances which is be beneficial to Malaysia and Sarawak.

His comments follow a proposal by Julau MP Larry Sng for a potential merger between PDP and PRS, with Sng stressing that it would bolster the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and advance the Dayak cause.

Sng’s suggestion comes in the wake of the dissolution of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) with its members being absorbed into PDP.

Political analyst Prof. James Chin of the University of Tasmania argued that major parties within GPS may oppose any merger between PDP and PRS, fearing the consolidation of Dayak representation.
