KUCHING: The Covid-19 pandemic, which forced countries to shut their borders, has taught Malaysia many valuable lessons, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said for instance, the closure of Brunei’s borders resulted in the northern areas of Sarawak being cut off from Kuching, causing difficulties, especially when essential supplies for the northern areas of Sarawak had to be sent through Sabah.

Realising this situation, he said, the federal government allocated RM7.2bil to establish a road network in the northern areas of Sarawak through the implementation of the Sarawak Sabah Link Road Phase 2 (SSLR2) project.

“It will involve construction (of new roads) and upgrading of existing roads spanning 322km, this project will connect Lawas, Limbang and Pekan Mulu towns without passing through Brunei,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (March 26).

“Today, I feel very fortunate to personally hand over the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) and appoint the project director for the implementation of SSLR at the Ministry of Works earlier,” he said.

He added that the implementation of SSLR2 will be done through four packages, and is scheduled to be completed within five years.
