KUCHING: The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (ACCCIS) has appealed for the Sarawak government’s support in integrating small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into high value industries.
Its president Kong Chiong Ung stressed the critical need for local SMEs to integrate into high value added industries and global supply chains.
This strategic approach, he said, not only unlocked new opportunities and enhanced local SME skills but also fostered balanced economic growth across Sarawak.
He asserted that ACCCIS had been actively advocating for business-friendly policies through SAMUDAH, with former president Datuk Tan Jit Kee, currently serving as vice president, championing initiatives aimed at supporting local enterprises and SMEs amidst regional competition.
“This underscores the dire need for the implementation of various pro-business policies and facilitations.
“As Sarawak enters a phase of rapid development, we stand at the threshold of a promising future.
“Let us seize the opportunities provided by the government and work tirelessly towards realising the prosperity goals of Sarawak,” he said.
Kong said this during the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (ACCCIS) Chinese New Year celebration and the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations gala dinner at the Imperial Hotel on Thursday night.
Envisioning a future of improved quality of life and substantial income for Sarawakians, coupled with thriving businesses and investors, he stressed the necessity of proactive preparation, government collaboration and engagement across all sectors.
He noted that ACCCIS had prioritised talent development alongside business policies, digital transformation, infrastructure development and skills enhancement.
As such, he expressed gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the allocation of RM500,000 last year to nurture young enterprises and enhance skills.
“We have organised numerous training courses across Sarawak, including sessions on artificial intelligence in business, digital construction, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies.
“These initiatives aimed to support the government’s digital economy agenda and promote sustainable development,” he added.
Kong lauded the foundation of steadfast political stability in Sarawak that had become the bedrock for robust economic progress.
He said under the visionary leadership of Abang Johari, Sarawak was confidently striding towards a sustainable future.
“The Premier is passionately advocating for green industries to spearhead our state’s economy, embracing sectors like the green economy, digital economy, renewable energy and hydrogen products.
“His unwavering dedication has rightfully earned him the title of the ‘Father of Innovation and Transformation of Sarawak,’ as he illuminates the way forward for us.
“These measures will serve as catalysts for reshaping Sarawak’s economic landscape. Looking ahead, our people, businesses, and investors all aspire for Sarawak to become an advanced and competitive economy,” he added.
