KUCHING: Sarawakians who are living outside the state have been urged to return home and contribute to the state’s development.
In stressing this, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said there are a number of areas where Sarawakians can lend their expertise particularly in the green energy sector.
“Acknowledging the importance of nation building, it is crucial for our people to unite in collective efforts. Reflecting on the past 60 years, I recognise our wealth in natural resources, especially oil.
“However, I now stress the importance of diversifying into green energy for our future prosperity. Sarawak, being blessed with hydroelectricity and renewable energy potential will ensure a bright future.
“The opportunities in the new economy must be explored for further job creation and economic growth,” he said when met after officiating at the lighting-up of Kenyalang Market and Everwin Chinese New Year sale on Friday (Feb 2).
Dr Sim said Sarawakians who are returning home for the festive season can witness the progress that Sarawak have undergone in recent years.
“I urge Sarawak youths, returning for the festive season, to consider their role in accelerating the state’s progress.
“The passing of laws in the state legislature recently, ensures that Sarawak retains control over its green energy resources aligning with the (sustainability) goal and maximising local benefits”.
Dr Sim also expressed hope for Sarawak to soar to new heights in the near future under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who laid out economic goals such as doubling of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.
Meanwhile, the deputy premier invited Sarawakians to visit the Kenyalang Park Chinese New Year Bazaar.
“Despite traffic challenges, the market stands out for its unique feature of hosting stalls from various ethnicities, showcasing the true essence of Sarawak’s unity.
“The market, a beloved tradition in Sarawak, draws people from all walks of life, including those returning from overseas for the festive season. The spirit of homecoming resonates strongly, emphasising the importance of family reunions during the festive season,” he said.
Also present during the ceremony is Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng. A total of 257 stalls are operating this year at the bazaar.
