Bintulu cops arrest 15 for cable theft

BINTULU: Police have arrested 15 individuals for stealing Telekom Malaysia (TM) cables during a two-day integrated operation beginning Jan 29.

Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the suspects were in the age range of 16 to 65 years and comprised 11 locals and four foreigners.

“Ten of the suspects have been charged in court while five are still facing ongoing investigations.

“The 15 individuals are a part of a five small groups operating around Bintulu, where its modus operandi involved cutting cables along roadsides before gaining access to tunnels where cable connections were located,” he said in a statement on yesterday (Feb 1).

Nixon said the estimated loss attributed to the cable theft was approximately RM500,000.

The case is now being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The TM cables that were in possession of the individuals.
